      Geography

      • Geography
Geography is a compulsory subject in ordinary level. However, it is optional in advanced level. Geography is defined as the study of man and his environment. The environment is man’s natural habitat. The components of the environment are: the biosphere, the atmosphere, the lithosphere and the hydrosphere. The biosphere means all living organism (e.g., animals, vegetables, bacteria, insects, etc). The atmosphere refers to the air that surrounds the earth. It surrounds the earth because the earth has a magnetic attraction force called gravity. The lithosphere is the solid part of the earth. The hydrosphere are the bodies of water. Three quarters of the earth is covered by water.

The teaching of geography, therefore, helps make students become aware of, and to be interested in knowing how land is formed and to use the knowledge for knowing how to locate places, and to prevent and to care for their environment.

The quality of our environment is now deteriorating and this is now of international concern, so that any activities which affect it should be critically understood.

The subject also serves to make students pursue an independent study and research both through reading and using evidence from the environment practically.
